Black AUGUST 2008!
On this edition of Rise Up Radio:
- Digo informs the Rise Up Radio Family about how children are being treated unequally at Oasis Children Services. Over crowded conditions for children in the “funded” program need our support! We encourage listeners to call up their local congressmen to put an end to misconduct against these New York City children. To contact Oasis Children directly go to www.oasischildren.com

- Kyam and Autumn Marie, organizers of Black August join us in the studio. Black August is an annual hip-hop event that raises consciousness with hip-hop and political education. It originated in the concentration camps of California to honor fallen and imprisoned Freedom Fighters. August is a great month to raise consciousness since it’s the same month that Nat Turner started a rebellion, the underground rail road was created, Marcus Garvey was born and many other notable black history events. This year EPMD, Bilal, KRS-One, Shadio Mansour, Smif N Wessun, and Immortal Technique will be performing at the Nokia Theatre on August 31st.
- Black August is more than a hip-hiop concert. Kyam and Autumn Marie have been involved in cop watching. They have stood outside with their community watching police from a safe distance to insure that they don’t act up. They also inform youth on their rights when they are being approached by cops. Black August has also gone international and shared it’s political education with folks in Cuba
