Beyond Beats and Rhymes
AUGUST 5 @ THE NEW YORK SOCIETY FOR ETHICAL CULTURE:
"Beyond Beats and Rhymes: Masculinity in Hip Hop Culture"
A film screening, youth panel discussion and performance to benefit WBAI 99.5FM.
"Beyond Beats and Rhymes," a new documentary by Byron Hurt, examines representations of manhood, sexism and homophobia in hip-hop culture. The film features highly revealing interviews with famous rappers such as Mos Def, Fat Joe, Chuck D, Jadakiss and Busta Rhymes; hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons, along with cultural commentary from Michael Eric Dyson, Beverly Guy-Sheftall, Kevin Powell, and Sarah Jones.
A discussion with filmmaker Byron Hurt and youth panelists will follow the screening. Also, performances from Urban Word NYC youth poets.
Time: August 5th, Doors @ 6pm, Film starts promptly @ 7pm.
Place: The New York Society for Ethical Culture
2 West 64th Street at Central Park West, New York, NY (map)
Tickets: $10 - youth 18 & under; $15 - adults.
No one will be turned away. For youth group rates, please leave message at 212-209-2948. Purchase tickets from 6-7pm the day of the event (online tickets no longer on sale). All proceeds benefit social justice radio, WBAI-NY 99.5 FM.
